Osmiza, which means "eight" in Slovenian, is a tradition that dates back to the time of Charlemagne. Empress Maria Theresa of Austria allowed Trieste's farms to open their houses to sell the surplus of their produce. This custom was consolidated in 1784 by the decree of Joseph II of Habsburg. In an osmiza, everything is homemade: wine, eggs, ham, salami, cheese, pickles and sometimes homemade desserts. The experience takes place in rustic settings, with wooden tables and benches, surrounded by vineyards. Entering an osmiza is a plunge into the past, where you can taste the flavors of the land in a festive and convivial atmosphere.

: My thought as I rated 4 stars was that I had hoped for a bit more hands on. We did get a chance to try Giovanni’s tasks, however, briefly. Also, I had requested English and it worked out with some technology but the language barrier did play a role in the end. We did learn pasta but we’re not privy to the filling recipe or the sauce recipes. I suppose that is a technicality. All in all we are very happy that we did this experience.

: My husband and I really enjoyed our cooking class. We learned how to make pasta and tiramisu. It was amazing and Giovanni was very gracious and a good teacher .
