World Food Day 2025

World Food Day 2025

On October 16, 2025, the world will come together to celebrate World Food Day, an event held in more than 150 countries and in 50 different languages, making it one of the most observed days on the UN calendar. It is a moment to reflect on the value of food and how we can transform our agrifood systems to ensure a fairer, more sustainable future for all.

This year’s edition has special significance: it also marks the 80th anniversary of the FAO, the UN agency that has been working for decades to reduce hunger and improve nutrition worldwide.

Why collective action is needed

Our planet is facing unprecedented challenges: armed conflicts, extreme climate events, economic shocks, and rising inequalities are putting enormous pressure on natural resources and food supply chains. While 673 million people still suffer from hunger, in other parts of the world obesity and food waste are on the rise. This imbalance shows clearly that only collaboration among governments, communities, businesses, and citizens can lead to more resilient food systems—capable of nourishing everyone while protecting the Earth.

What consumers can do

Even small daily actions make a big difference. Here are some concrete steps each of us can take:

  • Choose local and seasonal foods: eat plenty of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and add legumes, nuts, and whole grains to your diet. They are nutritious, require little water to grow, and help improve soil fertility;
  • Adopt healthy habits: promote balanced eating among friends and family, encouraging others to do the same. By spreading good practices, you support both individual well-being and public health;
  • Diversify your diet: explore traditional, seasonal, and locally grown foods—this not only benefits your health but also supports biodiversity;
  • Pay attention to labels: learn to read labels carefully to choose healthier products and reduce food waste. Remember: “best before” means the product can often be consumed safely beyond that date, while “use by” indicates when it should no longer be eaten;
  • Cut down on food waste: plan your meals, try creative recipes with leftovers, or compost organic waste instead of sending it to landfills;
  • Support those in need: consider donating or volunteering to assist vulnerable communities, especially during humanitarian crises;
  • Stay informed and raise your voice: follow reliable news sources, share accurate information, and engage with decision-makers to help promote positive change.
