The city of Bari is a fascinating discovery. The city’s two “faces” consist of the elegant murattiano neighborhood (the modern district) and the old city of Bari, nestled on the Adriatic Sea.

Bari is a sun-filled city, full of historical and gastronomic traditions. Here, you can explore the narrow streets of the old city, guided by the scent of Friselle (a dry and crunchy twice-baked bread), fresh olive oil and sun-ripened tomatoes, or watch mesmerized as the local massaie (homemakers) work intently at the art of folding orecchiette, which is not just a pasta, but a gastronomic religion.

The flavors and aromas of Bari’s cuisine take us to the home of our Cesarina, Juanita, who inherited her passion for the culinary arts from her grandmother Matilda, queen of the kitchen. Her name - Juanita - can be misleading; however, she really is of Puglia origins. This is made apparent just by sitting at her table, a table full of ...

Juanita was a wonderful host and teacher. We practiced our Italian and she her English with some help from google translate. Dinner was homemade pasta with her family’s sauce, pepper rolls, and tiramisu. We loved it all and the gracious company! Grazie Juanita!

From shopping at the public market to preparing the tiramisu, making pasta, and constructing the terrine, we learned amazing recipes and skills. But the highlight was being with Juanita in her home, having a warm, insightful experience in Italian culture and hospitality. You can never feel this richness walking the streets with a tour book in hand.

Shopping and cooking with Juanita was definitely the highlight of our trip to Puglia. Juanita did an extraordinary job of introducing us to the traditional foods of the region and now we can create our own Puglian food experience back home in Israel. We also got to experience life here as Juanita so graciously welcomed us into her home. This experience is a must for anyone visiting here.

It was a really nice experience! Juanita took us to the mercato coperto where we got to taste some local food and get some explanation on how the market works. We were impressed by the variety of products and the fish market! Concerning the cooking class, we learned a lot! While Juanita's explanation were clear and complete, the class was fun and easy to follow. Juanita and her husband made us feel comfortable in their home. We had a great time and look forward to cook Juanita's recipes at home!
