In the heart of Messina, I will accompany you on a journey to discover the secrets handed down by the grandmothers of yesteryear. I will welcome you with an aperitif and a local DOC prosecco, then we will prepare fresh pasta in three shapes together, with the same love and dedication that my grandmother taught me. We will conclude this experience by creating a delicious tiramisu, accompanied by a Sicilian wine made from native grapes. You will take with you, on your journey and in your heart, a piece of my history and my city.

If you do one thing in Messina, make it this cooking class. My husband and I were welcomed into a family’s home by Stephanie, her daughter, and her husband, and from the moment we walked in we felt like guests they’d known for years. It was just the two of us, which made the whole experience feel wonderfully intimate. We started by making tiramisu together, then rolled fresh pasta dough by hand and turned it into two dishes: a fettuccine and a spinach ravioli. Getting to do it all hands-on, side by side with people who clearly love what they do, was so special. And the food! You can taste that Stephanie cooks with love. After spending time eating our way through Rome and Taormina, this meal was hands down the best of our entire trip. We weren’t sure what to expect going in, and it exceeded every expectation. One tip: come hungry and don’t eat beforehand, because you will leave completely, happily stuffed. This was easily one of the highlights of our trip. If you’re anywhere near Messina, go!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and learning to make pasta with Stefania. Stefania and her family went out of their way to make sure we got to her home and made us feel like welcomed guests from the second we arrived. Making pasta was fun but the best part was getting to eat it after Stefania prepared it for us! We were completely happy (and full) at the end of our time together.

The whole experience was wonderful. We were on a cruise and Stefania’s place was only a 40 minute leisurely walk from the time we got off the ship. It was only me and my wife and we felt perfectly safe for the entire walk. I highly recommend walking if you can because Messina is such a beautiful area and loaded with storefront shops along the way (for the walk back). There were’t any street vendors trying to sell you stuff which was surprising. Usually ports for large ships attract a lot of street vendors. We didn’t see any of that. It truly felt as if we were locals walking in the city. We were initially worried that there would be steep hills for the walk but the whole trip was relatively flat. And we were visiting on Tuesday, April 21st which was perfect because it was 68 degrees F at 9:15am when we started which was perfect for walking. Her place was easy to find using AppleMaps to get us there. Stefania’s family was waiting outside their place when we arrived and escorted us across a small courtyard and into their home. It turned out that we were the only ones in the group which was a pleasant surprise. It was very intimate. They were super polite and had a very nice place. I could tell immediately Stefania and her family take pride in everything they do. The effort put into preparing the house for us was very evident. When we walked in we all introduced ourselves to each other and then Stefania showed us to the restroom so we could wash our hands before we got started. First, we learned how to make the dough which was later used to teach us how to make spinach ravioli and a wide-noodle pasta. Then she brought out the ingredients for tiramisu and completed that. She did a wonderful job showing us each step of the way and was very patient when we had minor mishaps (I failed miserably at mixing my eggs with the flour). While we waited for the dough to settle she made a charcuterie board as an appetizer which was wonderful. Everything was timed perfect. I highly recommend spending time making pasta and tiramisu at Safania’s. We will never forget our experience. P.S. Do not eat breakfast. We were stuffed when we left.

Raised alongside my maternal grandmother, I have nurtured a passion for cooking since I was a child, guided lovingly by my Nonnina and her treasured recipes. I cook to bring back the flavors and aromas of Messinese and Sicilian tradition, ancient yet still alive within me: from pesce stocco alla ghiotta to carefully prepared meat rolls, all made according to the recipes passed down through my family. My home is always open—not only to friends, but also to guests from other countries, with whom I enjoy sharing a chat and preparing together the precious family recipes.
