Express cooking class: learn how to make Pesto and enjoy an appetizer with a glass of local wine

Shared Experience
Your experience
  • Seasonal appetizer
  • Homemade fresh pasta

As we indulge in the beauty of the sea from the olive grove, I will reveal the secrets of our spice pesto. I will tell you its fascinating history and the traditional method of getting the perfect flavor. Then, I will show the two ways to make pesto: traditional or modern, mortar and pestle or electric blender. There will be no shortage of my tips for storing pesto optimally.

And after preparing our pesto, we will enjoy it with classic bavette. The experience lasts about two hours, during which you will be refreshed with cool water and a glass of some of the best wine from our local wineries.

The cooking class was awesome with Cesarine Barbara and her faithful sous chef, Stefano. It was overbooked by Viator, the tour company, but they made it work. They were welcoming, the cooking was hands on, and the food was delicious. The location was beautiful as it was held in their home, which was perched on a cliff overlooking Riomaggiore with beautiful views of the village and the ocean. But beware: the walk to get there is not for the faint of heart or those weak in the knees! You literally have to climb up, or down, the mountainside to get there. If you are unsteady on your feet, or uncomfortable with narrow dirt and stone paths, or climbing or descending uneven steps. If you are up for that, I highly recommend it!

Barbara and her husband had some interesting chemistry, but both lovely and hilarious people. Learning the ingredients to their homemade pasta was both intriguing and very informative. Everything was great other than 2 key elements. The first being that there was not a lot of 'hands-on' aspect to this cooking class. The cutting, prepping, mixing, and kneading were mostly done by the hosts while we stood around and wrote down her steps/ingredients in the provided notepads. We would have loved to be bit more involved with the whole process! Secondly, the photos of this booking make it seem like you are partaking in a cooking class overlooking the water with phenomenal views. This is sadly not the case, as Barbara's house is located on the inner side of the mountain, facing the valley. There's also quite a lot of shrubs and trees around blocking the view which would have been a bigger issue had we not been inside their house the entire time anyway.

Hi there, I'm Barbara!
I was born in the Gulf of Poets, to a Sardinian mother and a Genoese father, and spent my childhood with my beloved grandparents. I like to think of myself as a citizen of the world, but I have a strong connection to my land and its traditions, as does my husband Stefano. Together, we want to share our passion for cooking and our roots with other enthusiasts and curious minds. Since I was a child, I developed a strong passion for cooking, thanks to my grandmother who taught me to experiment and taste new flavors. I have always been adventurous and have tried all the original recipes from different countries around the world, but Ligurian cuisine remains my favorite. We decided to open the doors of our house, located on the terraces of the Cinque Terre above Riomaggiore, to share our passion for cooking and local culture. For us, cooking is the best way to tell the story of our land and pass on the true Ligurian tradition to others. We are excited to share this culinary journey with guests from around the world!
